The Material Things

The world has evoked a change

one that seems oh so strange

suddenly the world controls our thoughts

and we are encouraged to cast lots

the world suddenly controls us all

from politics to ads in the mall

how we are suppose to find out who are

if what defines us is our car

we say yes to the world and all of its ways

while in our minds it forever stays

telling us what to do and what to buy

when all of it is just one big lie

the movies, the music, the things that make us smile

will all be gone in a short while

what we base our lives upon

in a flash will be gone

suddenly the world around us will fall apart

and that is when we will see who was smart

we will see who put their trust in the things that will fade

or if they gave their all  in the friendships and great relationships they made

because the ones who have chosen to take life as it is

are going to be the ones that live

they will be the ones who will stand in the end

while a happy life the others will pretend

they will be the ones who stand over us all

while casting down a shadow so tall

although they will not boast

that they choose the things that matter most

we will all know that the ones on the ground

are lower than the rest all around

so do not put your trust

in things that in time will rust

do not put your faith in the material things

cause only pain this brings

put your faith in those who can sustain it

and love in those who can maintain it

only in doing this will we prevail

while the rest of the world will fail
